Our Universal Apostolic Preferences: Our New Mission

Father Arturo Sosa, SJ, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, has issued a letter detailing the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAP) to "guide and inspire" the Jesuit order in our ministries and works for the next decade. The four preferences are:

  1. Promoting Discernment and the Spiritual Exercises: Helping others find Christ and follow the Lord.
  2. Walking with the Excluded: Be present the poor, marginalized, neglected and abandoned in a "mission of reconciliation and justice."
  3. Journeying with Youth: Accompanying young people "in the creation of a hope filled future."
  4. Caring for our Common Home: Informed by the Gospel, to work towards the "renewal and protection of God's creation."

Formulating the UAP took 16 months and involved communal discernment involving Jesuits and collaborators worldwide. The UAP were given to Pope Francis, and after the Holy Father had reflected on and prayed with them, returned to Fr. Sosa as a mission to the society
