Father Joseph Kiu, a former member of the Province and a contemporary of Father Robert Ng, died in late May 1988 in Alor Setar, a town in the north of West Malaysia. Joseph had originally been a member of the China Province and had lived for many years in the Philippines until he applied for a transfer to the Macau-Hong Kong Province. He was actually a Malaysian from the East Malaysian state of Sarawak.

Before leaving the Jesuits in 1986, he had been Socius to the Master of Novices and in charge of the hostel, Xavier Hall. He had suffered poor health because of a liver problem over several years.
